It’s a basic question, but what is Sin? And why is it so bad?
The bible defines sin as “to step across a boundary,” or “to miss the mark.”
God gave us laws to show us how to live and how we can love God. As God says in Deuteronomy 30:15-16 and Jesus in Mathew 22:35-40, you should love God with EVERYTHING YOU ARE “heart, mind, soul”. To sum up what sin is, anything that misses the mark of us loving God in all that we think, say, and do. The expectation is to live every second of every day in complete focus of pleasing the Lord. Can you do that?
We miss the mark and cross the line all day every day when we take our focus off “how can I best glorify God in every moment.”
What is the effect of sin? God cannot live or be present with sin. He will not, cannot, be around it. How then can one talk, be with, or have a relationship with God? It is only by honestly calling sin what it is and asking for forgiveness.
I am not going to pretend to know all the ins and outs or to have full knowledge of how sin and forgiveness works, but I do know that as Christians, to live a life as close as possible to Jesus one needs to ask forgiveness often. We need to rid ourselves of this poison of sin daily, so we can love God and others better.
