The first time I had a conversation with Devan he was sitting in the building we host Club in with his headphones on waiting for him mom to finish with an appointment. He looked bored and annoyed, so I just stopped to see how he was doing. My first question was how is school going? His response was just a shrug. When his mom came in, I told her that on Thursday evenings we held Albany City Life Club along with other activities if he would be interested in joining. I gave her my phone number and told her that if he needed a ride, we would be happy to pick him up. Expecting not to hear from him, as he didn’t seem interested, the night before Club I got the phone call that Devan would like I ride to Club.
I picked Devan up and off to Club we went. He didn’t know anyone and for the first session he was quiet and just went along with the activities, not saying much the entire night. When it came time to drop him off, he said thank you and went inside. Thinking he didn’t enjoy it, I received a text later that night from him mom, asking when the next night was because Devan wanted to come back.
Fast forward a few months and there I was sitting next to Devan at a campfire making smore’s during our Albany City Life overnight camping trip at the YFC Edge Adventure Center. While sitting around the fire talking, Devan opened up about how happy he was that he came the first night, that he loves all the new friends that he has met, and that he gets to come experience and learn new things. At one point he turned to me and said, “Thank you Ms. Amanda. Today has been the best day and night of my life, even better than my birthday. I think God loves me.” I responded with “yes Devan, God truly does love you.” I then watched as he leaned back in his chair and looked at the stars and took in a deep breath and with a smile saying “this is amazing.”
Oh how amazing God’s love for us is! From a quiet kid at Club to declaring God’s love for him, Devan has come a long way in such a short period of time. I’m looking forward to seeing what God has in store for Devan’s life.
